As an Intuitive Eater I've learned how to understand, honor, and respect communication from my body. At times, it makes it clear that it needs space. Today is an example of this... After breakfast my body pretty much told me, "I'm good for awhile!" How did it tell me this? By the sense that my digestion has slowed down quite a bit and a feeling of being half full throughout the day. I could eat (out of habit) but that would cause me to feel pretty heavy -- which would slow me down energetically speaking. In the west we are taught, "You need three square meals a day, or else... (fill in the blank). For years I did this no matter how full I felt throughout the day -- eating three square meals is just what everyone does -- and so I did it too, because I was told to. Much of my thirties has been about asking questions and finding out for myself if all these things that are considered to be "the norm" really add up. I have spent 10+ years learning about Holistic Nutrition so I've felt pretty comfortable doing this, especially since so much of that decade has been about learning how to understand the communication from my body. After learning that in human history there were times where human beings didn't eat for days (and still would be just fine), I realized that if I'm not hungry and my digestion is backed up -- it's okay to skip a meal or two. I'm referencing hunter-gatherer cultures here. From what I've read it was pretty normal for them to feast every few days and have a whole lot of time to digest in between. Why Does this Matter!? By listening to my body's communication and waiting until I'm actually hungry to eat again, I keep my energy levels up. Digestion is a very energy-intensive-process and as someone who enjoys high levels of energy throughout the day -- I prefer not to weigh down my energetic potential by eating out of habit. Especially when my body has made it clear, "I'm good for awhile." Hopefully that makes sense! Bonus Section Now you might be wondering what I had for breakfast ha ha. Since I practice food combining I had breakfast in two stages. Part 1: Oatmeal (1/2 cup) cooked lightly + an organic banana, with full-fat organic coconut milk drizzled over the top. The oatmeal had some organic cinnamon and cloves mixed in. Part 2: Sunwarrior (Vegan) Chocolate Protein Shake mixed with reverse-osmosis purified + structured water and about one third cup of organic raw almonds. I waited a couple of hours after part-one before I had part-two so that the oatmeal and banana had time to digest. One huge staple of food combining is not to mix protein with fruit and starch. Since part one consisted of fruit and starch I gave that nourishment some space! Breakfast did contain a lot of fiber so it makes sense that I would feel pretty full today. The thing is, I trusted it. Because of that, my energy level has been fantastic today 🙌 No heaviness and no feeling of being mentally tired. That's exactly how I prefer to be 😊 Should you have any questions about this post feel free to send me a message via the form below!
